Center for Civic Education and Service
Working closely with the faculty at The Florida State University, the Center for Civic Education and Service has helped to identify the following as service-learning courses currently offered. This list is not intended to be exhaustive, as the process of discovering classes that combine service with learning is ongoing. Students should be aware that only selected sections of each course are service-learning, and therefore they should ask the proper academic department which sections have been designated service-learning.
A commonly accepted definition views service-learning as a teaching/learning methodology: 1) in which students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that meet actual community needs coordinated in collaboration with the school and the community; 2) that is integrated into the students' academic curriculum or provides structured time for a student to think, talk, or write about what the student did and saw during the actual service activity; 3) that provides students with opportunities to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real-life situations in their own communities; and 4) that enhances what is taught in school by extending student learning beyond the classroom and into the community and helps to foster the development of a sense of caring for others.
Please contact staff at the center, located at 930 W. Park Ave or call (850) 644-3342 if you would like to discuss any ideas or suggestions about service-learning at The Florida State University. An updated version of this list can be found at our website http://www.fsu.edu/~service.
