Guide to Web Applications at The Florida State University

General Information:

The web applications offered to the University community make use of Java and secure connections, where appropriate. To use these tools, you must have a Java-enabled browser. Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 4.x meet this requirement. In certain locations, systems administration may have installed these browsers but disabled Java. If you have difficulties using the web applications, please check with the appropriate computer support office at your place of work, library, or school.

Note: The Office of Administrative Information Systems at The Florida State University has received reports of a bug in versions of Netscape 4.61 or higher. This bug seriously affects a person's ability to effectively make use of the web applications currently available to the University community. While the University in no way endorses one browser over the other, individuals are encouraged to use Internet Explorer when accessing University web tools until such time as Netscape releases a new version or fixes the detected bug.

Many of the applications described in this Guide allow you (as the user) to control what you are searching for and the condition(s) of that search. For these reasons, the examples provided below are structured to lead you through the basic uses of the applications. No attempt has been made to cover every possible combination or use of these tools. That is left to you. Many of the applications are self-explanatory if you read the web page, as are any error messages you may receive. The common error messages and possible corrective measures are included in this Guide.
