Documenting Service Learning Courses

Service learning is community-based learning. Service learning is a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students (a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and (b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.

For each semester, as the Course Schedule Master File for each College/School/Department is updated, additional information will need to be collected from appropriate faculty members concerning whether or not their respective courses are service learning courses. Please ask faculty: “Is community service a required or optional component of your course for your students?”

Program Coordinators:

Please provide the following for every course AND section for which a faculty member incorporates community service as a required or as an optional component:

In the COMMENTS field:

COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIRED
or
COMMUNITY SERVICE OPTIONAL

Please, type one or the other phrase as indicated above exactly as shown. These phrases will be used as search mechanisms at a later time to determine the service learning courses in the database. It is extremely important that you type just the one phrase that is appropriate for each course.
