Veterans Educational Benefits

The Veterans Office at Florida State University acts as a liaison with the Regional Processing Office in Decatur, Georgia. Our goal is to assist veterans, or the dependents of veterans, with the application and certification process. Students who are eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill under Chapter 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 1606, 1607, or VEAP are able to apply for their respective educational benefits with assistance from this office. Any questions regarding the eligibility of a veteran or dependent can be answered by calling the National Call Center at 1-888-GIBILL1.

Responsibilities of Veterans Receiving Educational Benefits

  1. If you are using benefits for the first time you must file the appropriate application to the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Processing Office in Decatur, Georgia. Please refer to the appropriate section in The Florida State University Veterans Affairs Handbook here. A Certificate of Eligibility will be issued from the Department of Veteran Affairs. If you are using the new Post 9/11 Chapter 33 benefit or Transfer of Entitlement from a parent, this certificate is required before a certification of enrollment can completed.
  2. If you have received benefits at another institution an initial application is not necessary. A copy of your Certificate of Eligibility and appropriate Florida State University Veterans Affairs Request for Veteran Benefits form (found below) is all that is needed. Dependent upon your veteran status, other VA forms may be required, see “Changes” in the Florida State University Veteran Handbook.
  3. Once you have registered for classes, you must certify with the Florida State University Veterans Affairs Office each semester by completing a Florida State University Request for Veteran Benefits form (found below).
  4. In order to receive benefits, the courses taken must apply toward the student's major area of study or degree program.
  5. Any adjustment to the student's course load must be reported to the Veteran's Office immediately.
  6. Each semester the student may request a tuition deferment during the first five days of classes. This request must be made in person. Chapter 33/Post 9/11 GI Bill users will need to do this in order to avoid a late payment fee.

Check to be sure all areas have been addressed, print the form and return to the Veterans Section in the Office of the University Registrar. This form can be faxed, scan/emailed, dropped off or mailed.

Vet Letter for Financial Aid

Due to recent changes to the federal regulations Veteran benefits are no longer a part of the calculations for financial aid assessments. Vet Letters are no longer required effective Fall 2009.
